This was a surprisingly good read, although it was short. The title might be longer than the book itself, but the story is sweet and perfect for summer.
The plot revolves around the diverse cast of misfits who are working and swimming at the Yellow County Swim and Racquet Club, as they struggle to get along, develop crushes, and sell burgers from the snack bar. When tragedy strikes, they must band together or risk their beloved pool being shut down! I won’t say more about the plot for risk of spoiling it (did I mention it was short?), but the ending is both sweet and silly.
I’m still not entirely sure what age group this is geared toward, but it’s simple enough for children/young adults with enough cultural references to keep an adult occupied to the end, so maybe it’s for everyone?
Really not much else to say on this one, except that it’s quirky, made me laugh aloud at least twice, and I recommend it for anyone who’s intrigued by the title. OH! And make sure to turn back to the cover as you read, as there are Easter Eggs to the plot/characters covering the front of this tiny book!
AND WHAT ABOUT THE SEQUEL? That’s right! Harmon is released The Happenstances at the Yellow County Community College a Couple of Semesters Later (The Happenstances, #2) this past June! Not sure the first one really needed a sequel, but I still kind of want to check it out. If I do, I’ll be sure to let all y’all know if it’s just as good! In the meantime, Happy Reading!
